Madilyon Australian Terriers

Breed Information

Background

Proudly Australian, the breed evolved from a variety of British terriers that had been brought out to this country by settlers.  Specifically bred for Australian conditions, this hard-bitten tough little terrier was used for everything from guarding the farms and mines to hunting, and from tending the sheep to killing rats and snakes.  Although essentially a working terrier, the "Aussie" as they are affectionately known, soon endeared themselves to all those with whom they came in contact as a very desirable companion dog in their own right.   Equally suited to town or country living, the Australian Terrier is noted for their loyalty, intelligence and even disposition.  They are neither highly strung nor a persistent barker, but with their inbuilt spirit, courage and air of self assurance, happily assumes the role of protector for home and household.  Sturdy, with a harsh easy-to-care for coat, and a history of longevity, the Australian Terrier finds much favour as both an indoor and outdoor companion.  Affectionate and well-mannered this spunky little dog tends to develop its own amusing and endearing characteristics to delight the family.

Average Lifespan

The average lifespan of an Australian Terrier is 12 - 15 years or longer.

Breed Personality/Characteristics/Temperament

The Australian Terrier is an even tempered dog, versatile in movement, good company for young and old, it delights in human companionship.  Small and tough, it is equally at home on a farm or in a suburban backyard and make good house dogs.  Not a constant barker, it prefers to bark at something amiss.

Compatibility with other pets

The Aussie adapts well to other pets i.e. cats and dogs (but remember they are a hunting/sporting terrier so rabbits, guinea pigs etc may prove a problem).  Best introduced to other pets at an early age, but even when mature they do assimilate easily into a new household - however extreme care should be taken with 2 adults of same sex.

Care Requirements

A low set, sturdy, rough-coated dog.  Extremely well adapted for Australias changing climates and protected by a double coat - a soft undercoat with a weather resistant harsher top coat which grows to a length of 6.5cm (2 1/2 inches).  In maturity both sexes have a ruff framing the head at the neck which then extends into an apron covering the chest.  It has a topknot of lighter colour, finer texture to main body coat.  Brush their coat a couple of times a week as the brushing stimulates the natural oils in their coat giving them a high gloss.  Bathe only when necessary.  Minimum exercise is needed, but they will enjoy a daily walk or free roam in a fenced yard.

Please Take Note

The Aussie is essentially a hunting/sporting terrier (terrier meaning earth dog), so must have good secure fencing and never be off lead in a public area.

Ideal Owner/s

All Australians who want a warm hearted "character" for a lifelong friend and companion and suited to most of lifes situations.  Easy to train for both breed and obedience competition or for a well-mannered pet.
